Basic Life Support (BLS) Initial

This BLS class, which is recommended for Nurses, Doctors, Paramedics, EMTs, Dentists, Pharmacists, LVNs and other medical personal, is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

 

SCHEDULE YOUR CLASS

The AHA’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Who should take this course?

The AHA’s BLS Renewal Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel with an active non-expired BLS e-Card who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings.

 

What this course teaches

High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants

  • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • Important early use of an AED
  • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
  • Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

Course Emphasis

  • Emphasis on high-quality CPR, improvement of chest compression fraction, and high-performing team dynamics.
  • Video-based course with real world scenarios that teaches basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and pre-hospital settings.

 

Course Completion e-Card 

American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion e-Card is valid for two years.

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations.
Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing.
Students also complete a written exam

How long is the BLS Initial Course?

  • Approximately 4 hours with breaks

Basic Life Support (BLS) HeartCode – Online

HeartCode courses are non-refundable.

The BLS online class is a blended Hybrid Course released by the American Heart Association (AHA) allowing for a more fluid blended education. The BLS Heartcode allows students to take and learn the material at their own pace and is good for initial or renewal certification. Upon completing the BLS online class, the student is required to print out the course completion of the BLS on-line class they took and bring it for the Skills checkoff. After successfully completing both online and in-class skills checkoff, the student will receive an AHA eCard or Certificate valid for 2 years.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in all AHA courses and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the AHA

The online portion must be completed prior to the scheduled hands-on session. Students must arrive with online course completed and the certificate of completion printed out.

 

What this course teaches

  • Updated to reflect new science in the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR & ECC
  • The learner has a choice of completing a pre-hospital or in hospital-contextualized track.
  • Learners follow a continuously adapting learning path that is personalized by the learner’s own inputs: Their performance, and their self- reported confidence level related to each probe. The course content is presented in the form of self-directed learning content, probes and Cognitive Assessment Activities.
  • After completing the online portion, students will attend a structured, Instructorled hands-on session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team scenarios, discussions of local protocols and skills testing.

Course Completion Card or Certificate

Part 1: must be paired with a hands-on skills practice and testing session

Parts 2 and Part 3: with an AHA BLS Instructor

Students who successfully complete Part 1 receive a certificate that allows them entrance into a skills practice and testing session. An AHA BLS – Basic Life Support course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of all three parts.

How long is the BLS Heartcode Online Course?

  • Part 1: Approximately 3-4 hours
  • Part 2 and 3: Approximately 30 – 40 minutes
